Event Description: Venu Naad, Solo exhibition of paintings by K Subramaniam (Mani)
About the Theme (Venu Naad: Hear the Colours of the Flute): Art, like music, transcends words—it is a language of emotions, a bridge to the metaphysical, and a journey into the self. Hear the Colours of the Flute is an invitation to immerse oneself in the silent symphony of colours, where the brushstrokes whisper melodies of self-awakening and deep introspection.
Rooted in a unique synthesis of Zen, Western and Indian philosophies, this collection of paintings reflects another step in my relentless quest for meaning, an exploration of truth that extends beyond the canvas. While symbolism plays a vital role in my works, my approach ensures that the viewer finds a connection within each piece.
The painting Venu Naad or notes of the Flute, symbolizes the breath of the universe—the subtle, all-pervasive sound that resonates within us. Like the soft notes of a flute, my paintings seek to evoke an inner stillness, a heightened awareness, and a sense of transcendence. In the painting ‘Sakhi Hey’, inspired by Jayadev’s Ashtapadi, the man with folded arms, symbolizes stillness, introspection, and the unchanging witness, while the woman, embodies the dynamic rhythm of existence. The trees (flute) behind them are conduit of divine sound—Venu Naad, the eternal resonance of the universe. It is a symbol of surrender, of letting go.
From the meditative echoes of Nandi’s Eternal Wait to the profound energy of Agnya Chakra, each painting carries the essence of seeking, of stillness, and of surrender.
This exhibition is not just a display of art; it is an invitation to journey beyond the visible—to listen to the silence, to hear the colours, and to feel the music of existence.
About the Show by Harsha V Dehejia: When the heart trembles and the mind is full of feelings it is the Venu nada that makes the words come alive. When voices become silent and footfalls are not heard any more, Venu nada is still heard in its soft dulcet tones assuring us that the sound of the flute will take us to Krishna under the Kadamba tree where we will rest and find ourselves.
KRISHNA SUBRAMANIAM, popularly known as Mani, is a civil servant by profession, pursuing art as a passion for the last four decades. A self-taught artist, he began with watercolors, experimented with acrylic and later oil became his final medium.
Mani’s works arise from an innate personal vision that try to engage the viewer through a wider awareness, using mystical themes and experiences. Influence of Indian and Western philosophy, Sufism and Zen is reflected in his works.
Mani has successfully leveraged his art to add value to his professional work as evident from his mural ‘Crusade Against Corruption’ displayed at the Central Vigilance Commission or the mural on good governance at the AG Office, Srinagar.
Serving with the World Health Organisation at Geneva, he promoted yoga and wellbeing through his art, while his painting on the civil war during his assignment in Afghanistan has attracted many. His paintings also convey religious harmony through the depiction of the perennial philosophy.
