Event Description: A Solo Art Exhibition by 'Mina' (Mrs. Wilhelmina Quaynor)
Curated by Yashica Salvan
MINA, Mrs Wilhelmina Quaynor (formally Miss Wilhelmina Okpoti Sowah) born in 1964, is an eminent artist, who has always had a passion for Art and the creative industries. She attended Aburi Girls Secondary School for her Secondary education and graduated from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi in Ghana in 1988 with a BA Hons in Fine Art. Since then, she has also studied and graduated from other courses. She exhibited her work in several venues both solo and in group exhibitions in Ghana after graduation.
She won first prize in a National Art Exhibition in Ghana called "Save the Seashore Birds" in 1989, (the work is currently in the possession of the French Embassy) after which she was recognised as a professional artist. She was invited by the producer of a national Ghanaian TV programme "Living Arts" as a Hostess interviewing and promoting Ghanaian Artists. She was also a member of other art radio broadcasts, till she left Ghana to the United Kingdom.
MINA usually paints in oils and watercolours and her love for nature is depicted in her paintings.
When her husband Sam was posted to New Delhi India, MINA decided to have a career break from being an Employment Coach to pick up her artistic skills, where she had left off. She enrolled on an Online Art Course with Delhi Collage of Art in 2021. She graduated in 2022 with a Super Professional Diploma in Fine Arts, after one year of study. She developed her acrylic and pastel skills during this time. Most of her current works are in acrylic as a result of her newfound skills. The fact that acrylic paint dries very fast suits her painting style. Renu from the Collage of Art has been her mentor after her tuition with Tanisha. Renu has inspired and supported MINA to exhibit her work. All thanks to Renu. Thanks also to Shri Ashwani Kuma Prithviwasi Founder and Principal of Delhi Collage of Art who inaugurated her first Show in India.
MINA's fascination with the incredible monuments and sights of India has inspired her to make an Art collection themed 'Incredible India' using mostly acrylic medium. MINA had her first Solo Exhibition 'Incredible India' at the India Habitat Centre in September 2023, curated by Aakshat Sinha. She has expanded her works with a focus on Varanasi, the Holy City for Hindu Devotees. These works are included in her Solo exhibition coming up at the AIFICS showcasing the truly incredible sights of India. The colour, splendour and devotion.
Artist Statement: MINA believes that irrespective of the trials and tribulations of life, one can make time to enjoy nature and architecture, both old and new when looked at with a fresh pair of eyes. Most iconic buildings are from the past, but still relevant in the present. 'Time Past in Time Present'
