Comments by Shri Adwaita Gadanayak, formerly DIrector General, National Gallery of Modern Art
The creative journey ranging from lush landscapes to figurative paintings with vibrant flowing strokes represents the distinct profile of Sharmila Thapar’s art practice. Taking it further, the artist has well experimented with abstract paintings too, in her characteristic strokes. Her experiments with mosaic, gouache, decoupage, fired clay and paper burn also reflect the diversity in varied mediums.
She has travelled extensively all over the world which is generously reflected in her creative endeavors. Her passion for the arts is joyfully evident in her creative strokes, majorly in brilliant hues. The joyfulness of nature is well represented in the works of art such as Mosaic, Celebrations in the Levant and Dancing Flowers. Rich blossoming floral pastures in deep hues reflect the felt loveliness and charm of nature as has been experienced by her during her diverse travels. Celebration of life in varied cultures has also been beautifully depicted in her creative language. The rich color palette is occasionally subdued with pristine white, which forms focus with a flying dove with an olive branch of peace.
Her decorative decoupage panels beautifully reflect an assimilation of vivid floral patterns finding prominence beside a bright background.
I congratulate her on her first solo art exhibition at the Visual Arts Gallery, India Habitat Centre, New Delhi. While she has seen the sun rise and set in various continents, it is her first endeavor here in India to represent her works of art in an exhibition.
I wish her grand success and applause for all her sincere efforts for this exhibition and also for all her creative accomplishments in the near future too.
