Event Description: Moonweavers - चांद के जुलाहे Presents An Evening of Open Mic Poetry
Theme: Shattering the Stereotype
We at Moonweavers - चांद के जुलाहे take inspiration from the eternal metaphor of unbridled creativity and passion, the moon that is. And moon for us is not bound by its stereotypical associations of beauty and goodness. The moon is twisted too and is capable of both light and darkness in equal intensity. Poetry too for us is not bound by parochial and rigid conceptions of ideology, cliques, labels. It is the very essence and spirit of life. And it is to explore this spirit that we gather yet again at our favourite place in Delhi to get immersed in the heady whirlwind of poetry!
It is going to be a poetry open mic. So a participant could read only self-composed poems. You could read 2 self-composed poems in English, Hindi, Urdu or any other language as long as it is accompanied by some sort of a basic translation. And we have a theme-based open mic this time. So please do try to read pieces that fit in the theme.
The theme for the evening is ‘Shattering the Stereotype’. Stereotypes are all around us. In fact, we are so overwhelmed by these in our day to day lives that we take them for granted. Stereotypes form the crux of much of social and community conversation, a lot of jokes we exchange on an everyday basis are also based on stereotypes. There is the stereotype of the plain Jain, the macho man, the stereotype of the urban poor, the stereotype of the modern woman, so on and so forth… We want poems that shatter these stereotypes, turn them upside down. Your poetry could be philosophical or conceptual, it could weave its own alternative myths or stories that are fresh in perspective and bring forth people and situations, devoid of stereotypes. The only condition is there has to be some sort of critical engagement with what is normative in the society in your poetry. It is up to you how to challenge it.
