Event Description: The Spirit of Africa Festival - Akshara x P[ART]icle Collective
In light of the recurring, disturbing incidents involving violence against African nationals in Delhi as well as other parts of the country over the last few years, we at the Akshara felt there was an urgent need for an understanding of Africa through theatre, music, poetry, food and films.
With no support from Government or corporate sources (except for a very small grant from the Culture Ministry) we have gone ahead under our own steam to create the Spirit of Africa Festival at the Akshara on November 16 and 17, with the help of The Particle Collective, a group of young artists working towards a more inclusive society.
Despite our lack of resources, we have put together an entertaining, comprehensive and joyous celebration of the culture of Africa. The Spirit of Africa Festival is a vibrant, joyous two-day celebration of the theatre, music, literature, art, poetry and food of the African continent. There will be African food, art, photography, stalls on both days from 2pm and 10pm. Khanapados, a community kitchen initiative which works with refugee women under the guidance of Shreejata Roy, will serve up authentic Somali cuisine. There will also be a curated Ethiopian food and coffee-tasting activity.
Through this Festival we wish to overcome prejudices and racial discrimination and foster a sense of friendship, dialogue and affection between the citizens of Delhi and the African communities in the city.
