Event Description :
Like a Leaf in Autumn, solo exhibition by American expat artist Waswo X. Waswo

Gallery Espace features new and previously unseen miniature paintings by Waswo X. Waswo and his longtime collaborator, Rakesh Vijay, in exhibition titled Like a Leaf in Autumn. To commemorate the show, the gallery will also release a catalogue with text by renowned art historian Annapurna Garimella.
Walking a thin line between parody and self-examination, Waswo often depicts himself in his works as a fictional character, such as The Evil Orientalist, The Photowallah and The Observationist in a Stolen Garden. In keeping with this idea, the carefully composed miniatures in this exhibition compel the viewer to be perplexed, and to explore the position of the protagonist in context of history, myth, and actuality. The selection of miniatures, spanning the length of the more-than-a-decade long collaboration between Waswo and Vijay, follows physical realities that segue into the realm of the psychological, and archetypal.

Quotes from the artist
“I’ve envisioned this exhibition as a journey through a wilderness. Not a geographical
wilderness, but a wilderness of the mind.”
“There is a lot of disconnection expressed in these works: a disconnection from society, from
roots; from linear histories. There is confusion: a confusion of geographies and cultures,
learned expectation and visual disjunction; the gardens of delight that border the danger of
frontier.”
“At this stage in my life, I find myself disconnected from the predominant political and
philosophical ideologies of our time...I am in a no-man’s-land of independent beliefs, struggling
to find a path forward in the rapidly morphing reality of our times.”

About Waswo X. Waswo & Rakesh Vijay
Waswo X. Waswo is an American artist living in Udaipur, Rajasthan. Known for his series
of painted photographs and miniature paintings, he is also a writer and curator. His work
examines the ethnography of the colonial era and offers a unique view that is a mix of homage and critique. Through the years, he has collaborated with local artists, citing traditional images by re-inventing new representation to already established myths. Waswo first started working with the miniaturist Rakesh Vijay when he was looking for a traditional artist to translate his poems into visuals. More than a decade later, they continue to collaborate regularly on an ongoing series of miniature paintings. While the concept behind the artworks remains Waswo’s, Vijay blends the traditional miniature art form to adjust to and encompass Waswo’s vision. Tutored by miniaturists Sukdev Singh Sisodiya and Laxmi Narayan Sikaligar, Vijay is the grandnephew of acclaimed Rajasthani painter Ramgopal Vijayvargiya.
