Event Description : Hidden Heritage walk: Sultan Ghari
The Sultan Ghari is the tomb of Nasir-ud-din Mahmud, the eldest son of the Slave Dynasty ruler Iltutmish. But for Mahmud’s early death, the chapter of Razia Sultana coming to the throne would perhaps never have opened. This tomb is older than any structure of the Mughal, Tughlak or Khilji periods, and its structure dates to the same time as the Qutab Minar.
Given its antiquity, and the heritage lost due to the Partition, this may be the oldest existing
tomb of an Islamic Prince on Indian soil. During his life, the Prince had no pretensions to
spirituality. So why is his tomb worshipped by both Hindus and Muslims even today? Is
there more under the surface than historians have made people believe?
Let’s explore the place and understand it a little better.
