Event Description : ART EXHIBITION "The Last Human Kingdom" by artist Shuvaprasanna
Art Indus is opening a curated exhibition of Shuvaprasanna ‘s timeless works, which is the first in a series of upcoming exhibitions at the gallery exploring “pure reflections” of literature in art. The show revisits Shuvaprasanna’s notion of mythical surrealism, contemplating his ethereal anthropomorphisms in light of Jibanananda Das’ epic poem Mrityu-r-Agey (Before Death) and within other literary contexts that enrich his deeply sensitive subject. His works explore the surreal roots of Bengal’s mythicism, exploring its relevance within and beyondits historically darkest era, one that witnessed grave famine and monumental depression — what also birthed some of the most hauntingly beautiful art in Indian modernism.
Throughout his artistic journey Shuva has sought reconciliation of our nothingness, what has been a tireless endeavor to present us with deep sensitivity and meaning even when foreshadowed by the harshest of times. By way of this exhibition one does hope to inspire the belief that Shuvas aves, as also the dogs, the wild boar and the ponies would remain the most lofty and delicate creatures that remind us ever more earnestly of our compassion and guilelessness as human beings.
Shuva’s earliest works are glimpses of Kolkata, from within and beyond a curtain of innocence. They project a childlike propensity, that though for its subject has a reality that seems at once harsh and unnerving, and yet in its dénuement (nakedness) bears the seed of illusionment, of fantasy-‘where the absence of any known restrictions, allows the perspective of several lives lived at once; now the only interest becomes in the fleeting.
