Event Description :
DHOOMIMAL.COM presents PURE CONCEPT, a group show of drawings by top Indian artists

All great art starts from a simple drawing. The extraordinary skill and sureness with which it is executed, the brisk and irreversible mark of the pen or pencil, the instinctive selection of the few essential lines and the dependence on rhythm instead of structure constitute some of the charms of drawings by great masters.

Says Priyank Jain, Director, Dhoomimal.com: “A line drawing is the purest form from which art emanates. All the greatest artists the world has known were great draftsmen and this linear control and the eventual distortion of it has come to define them as geniuses of their eras! On display will be drawings of several past and living masters of the Indian art fraternity, some of whom we revere as legends and whom every student of art, admirer and aficionado looks up to. This show is mounted as an annual format and the search for suitable works gives us as much pleasure as it gives to enthralled viewers every year.”

On display will be works by artists like Akbar Padamsee, Anupam Sud, Arpana Caur, Bhupen Kakhar, Dharmanarayana Dasgupta, FN Souza, Ganesh Pyne, Jai Zharotia, Jamil Naqsh, Jogen Chowdhury, Kartick Pyne, KG Subramanyam, Lalu Prasad Shaw, Manjit Bawa, Manu Parekh, MF Husain, Nandlal Bose, Neeraj Goswami, Nikhil Biswas, Paritosh Sen, Prokash Karmakor, Sanjay Bhattacharya, Satish Gujral, Shuvaprasanna, Sudhir Patwardhan, Sunil Das, Thota Vaikuntam and Vrindavan Solanki.

Line and drawing must always work in unison. The most remarkable quality of line in drawing is its capacity to suggest solid form, its nuances and contours. A form must be defined by drawing an outline and this outline, unless it is to remain lifeless, must carry a rhythm of its own. While line must have the ability to spring, dance and take off on its own rhythm and strength suggesting both movement and form, tone, texture, light and shade in drawing can indeed suggest weight, volume and contour by way of moulding the form. In fact form is suggested by the two vital ingredients of line and light and shade, the former by its variation of thickness and the latter by the gradation of light and dark.

Pure Concept showcases some excellent samples of impactful drawings, each work a collector’s item. Akbar Padamsee’s faces and Arpana Caur’s forms embody minimal qualities, subtle and remote. Satish Gujral’s works on the other hand are bold and good examples of the moulded form as are Thota Vaikuntam’s women portraits. Souza’s nudes exude brute reality, images throbbing with the synergy of lines. Lalu Prasad Shaw’s work is defined by a delicate sensibility of the Bengali bhadralok while Ganesh Pyne delves into the folk elements of Bengal school.
