ABOUT THE SHOW
The programme will feature “Nritya Abhinaya” on Radhe-Krishna on the occasion of Janamashtami, presented by the disciples of renowned classical dancer Uma Sharma. It comprises of unique dance form that combines the traditional Raas of Vrindavan along with the classical Kathak.
She has been performing on the theme of Krishna since the past 30 years. From Baal-Leela to chapters from Bhagavad Geeta. This Janamashtmi, she will be presenting Krishna raas leela in Kathak and Brij raas style at India International Center.
Keeping pace with the changing times, maintaining the theme interesting and relevant is a challenge, this made her to incorporated new elements in her performance. The danseuse has worked with various moods of the Lord and presented different episodes of his life.
The idea was conceived by Uma Sharma as a dance form; the choreography blends devotional compositions of legendary poets: Swami Haridas, Surdas, Meera and Jaydev with the classical Kathak dancing style.
It will also include some compositions by few notable poets of Bhakti Movement such as Raskhan and Dev Kavi.
This is the 13th consecutive year of the “Dances for the Gods, by the Gods” Radhe- Krishna bringing forth a true sublime spiritual experience on the eve of Janamashtami.
The programme being presented by Uma Sharma and her disciples has vocal support and music direction by Pt. Jwala Prasad.
About Uma Sharma
Uma Sharma is a renowned kathak dancer, choreographer and teacher. She is known for stimulating the old classical dance form of Natwari Nritya or the Raslila of Brindavan which later evolved into Kathak.
She also runs the Bharatiya Sangeet Sadan, classical dance and music academy situated in New Delhi, founded by her father in 1946.
Kathak is mainly based on devotional and spiritual Krishna poetry of the medieval times and the highly refined court poetry of the 18th and 19th centuries which celebrated shringara, the sentiment of love.
After she learnt the presentation of conventional dance items, she has broadened the stock of Kathak by composing new dance forms and full length dance-drama on a diverse theme in dances.
Uma Sharma , through her entire career span, has performed in various shows and functions, of both national and international stature. Her international performances include places like New Zealand, Australia, USA, Canada, Middle East, Japan and China.
Uma Sharma runs her own School of Music and Dance in the capital and has trained a whole new generation of younger dancers. She has also been awarded Padma Bhushan for her notable work.
