Event Description : DANCE : Double Bill - Performances around Gender & Society.

We invite you for viewing two short performance pieces reflecting on the gender politics and
sexuality. Thanks to our gracious hosts, we are performing at four different venues on four
days. After the performances, we would open for a short discussion session.

Aastha Gandhi, Ankush Gupta, Mahesh Saini & Nikita Maheshwary

Performances :

TUJHKO BANAYA GAYA HAI MERE LIYE
Duration : 20 mins
The piece investigates the representation of women in the Indian pop culture. It questions
their objectification, the handed down warped codes of romance and the glorification of
sexism in the mainstream that masquerades itself, sometimes as an innocent joke or gets
etched in our heads as a catchy item song.
Set on the timeless, iconic romantic nazam from the 1976 Bollywood movie ‘Kabhi-Kabhi’,
the piece borrows the movement vocabulary from the popular cultural image of a female
and male body. It attempts to capture the varied gender equations,
the society’s innate permissiveness towards the quintessential ‘chedkhani’ or eve-teasing
and how this collective tolerance propagates and contributes to gender-related violence.

WE...WOMEN //: TRIGGER WARNING
Body. Desire. Sexuality. Movement.
Duration: 30 mins
The body is an archive of memory and spills it around consciously/subconsciously. Every
gesture, every silence, every image has a life. This work is an interrogation between
subjectivity and movement. The memories are personal but the histories are shared. These
histories break into images but live in movements. In fact, they are both interwoven so
densely that we don't know if the movement is to pull the personal and the shared apart or to tie them further. What we do know, is that the body desires.
Is this desire a social construct?
Does the body respond to the slightest provocation, or does the body provoke?
We question the concept of the body itself, introducing digital landscapes and virtual images
which converse, struggle and negotiate with each other, creating a complex experience.
Trigger Warning is not about what you see, for the images don't require discretion- they
don't disturb you, they are not graphic; but amidst the proliferation of mo(ve)ments in this
performance, we don't know which one will unsettle you, offend you, trigger you.
The performance has four sections- they are not pieces of a puzzle, they are visions of an
ever changing landscape- dreams of a never ending slumber, sweat of a never stopping
Sisyphus.
