Event Description : WALK : Sahapedia presents "Shahjahanabad before Shah Jahan" Trail from Turkman gate to Daryaganj!
Everyone knows about the fact that Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan built Shahjahanabad in the mid-17th century when he shifted his capital from Agra to Delhi in 1639. He chose to build this capital further north of the previous cities at Mehrauli, Siri, Tughlaqabad, Jahapanah, Purana Qila and Firoz Shah Kotla, along the Yamuna riverfront adjoining Salimgarh Fort. However, some southern parts of this new imperial city overlapped with the northern parts of the older Firoz Shah Kotla and incorporated some important monuments from the Delhi Sultanate and Tughlaq period within the city walls of Shajahanabad. These monuments, like the Kalan Masjid and Razia Sultanas grave, are now located in the neighborhood of Mohalla Kabristan and Bhojla Pahari. The walk will cover these areas and also the Turkman Gate, Holy Trinity Church, Teliyon ka Phatak, Shah Turkman Bayaban’s dargah, Delhi Gate, parts of Shahjahanabad’s original walls, a Martello Tower, Dr.Ansari’s House and end at the Ghata Masjid at Daryaganj.
