Event Description : TALK "Mapping the Meandering Heritage Trail of Chitpore, Calcutta" with Sunanda Chatterjee
This talk intends to trace a particular historical trajectory of Calcutta discussing its development as a colonial city with its newly emerging gentry and the enormous buildings they raised as their residences. These magnificent mansions were spread all across what was known as the 'Black Town' or native town, comprising Chitpore and the adjoining areas. This region is also replete with temples which are prized assets inherited from the past. It is an area that is only waiting to be noticed and conserved. Sunanda Chatterjee is an independent researcher, writer and an ELT editor with penchant for ‘fixing the text’. She has done research on the Brahmo Samaj, the architectural heritage of old Calcutta and the forgotten Bengali freedom fighters martyred during India’s struggle for Independence. Her work has been appreciated by the publishing industry, and in 2016 one of her editorial projects received the Best Book Award from the Federation of Educational Publishers.
