Event Description : Pro Helvetia – Swiss Arts Council presents ‘Poetry in percussion’ by Swiss music legends Pierre Favre and Lucas Niggli and Tabla maestro Aneesh Pradhan from India.
Pro Helvetia – Swiss Arts Council will be hosting ‘Poetry in percussion’ in Delhi this month. Swiss music legends Pierre Favre and Lucas Niggli and Tabla maestro Aneesh Pradhan from India will come together to present an evening of rhythms, beats and friendship. The tour follows an initiative of Pro Helvetia New Delhi to bring together leading percussionists from Switzerland and India to create work during an intensive workshop last year. Lucas Niggli, Pierre Favre from Switzerland and Aneesh Pradhan from India met in March 2015 at Peninsula Studios in Delhi to prepare these and other compositions. They will now be finally performing in India post the workshop.
About the artists :
Pierre Favre :
Switzerland was definitely the first European country whose drummers could be named in the same breath with the great American drum stars. Pierre Favre descended from this tradition. He is considered to be one of the world’s best percussionists, a passionate lyric poet who creates sound-colour-poems, a musician of the highest sensibility.
Pierre Favre was born in Le Locle, Switzerland. He started playing drums as an autodidact at the age of fifteen and turned professional two years later. He played swing music for many years in the big bands. He played Dixieland, swing and be-bop before he discovered the newer forms. From this background he developed into a highly sensitive musician and a master of empty spaces and pauses. Seldom has anyone in jazz played drums so quietly. Favre is indeed a poet of the drums.
As a solo percussionist, he toured all round the world. Still Favre feels very much related the European music tradition. Pierre’s vision is one of percussion as a melodic voice, rather than just rhythmic variations. He’s been described in the European press as a poet, painter, and sculptor. His work has been called lyrical, passionate, and mysterious.
Aneesh Pradhan :
A disciple of tabla maestro Pandit Nikhil Ghosh, Aneesh Pradhan is a leading tabla soloist and accompanist to vocal and instrumental music and dance. He has inherited from his guru a considerable repertoire of traditional tabla solo compositions from the Delhi, Ajrada, Lucknow, Farrukhabad and Punjabgharanas. A recipient of several awards, Aneesh is a popular performer for classical and inter-cultural music concerts at most prestigious concerts and festivals in the country and overseas.
He is an Adjunct Research Fellow at the India Research Centre, Macquarie University, Australia. He was also a Research Fellow at the Department of Media, Music and Cultural Studies, Macquarie University, Australia. He regularly conducts lecture-demonstrations, as guest lecturer at the Music Department, University of Mumbai.
Aneesh is a keen researcher of trends in performance, music education and patronage that unfolded in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, he writes frequently on music for newspapers, journals and other publications in India and abroad. Aneesh is Founder-Director of Underscore Records, an independent online record label that he established with vocalist Shubha Mudgal. Along with Shubha, Aneesh also curates a festival called Baajaa Gaajaa: Music from 21st Century India which celebrates and showcases the diversity of music from India.
Lucas Niggli :
Lucas Niggli was born in West Kamerun. He lived there before he moved to Switzerland. His affinity to music, especially to percussion instruments, was quite strong at a very young age. Between 1987 and 1995, he played at the experimental New Jazz formation «Kieloor Entartet».
In 1995 he founded the avant-core band «Steamboat Switzerland» with Dominik Blum and Marino Pliakas. More than 150 concerts, 4 cd and 2 vinyl recordings testify to the group’s intense and hard work. «Lucas Niggli’s Zoom» was founded in 1999 (with Nils Wogram And Philipp Schaufelberger) They have performed at all of Europe’s big festivals, (Moers, Saalfelden, Willisau, Le Mans) as well in Vancouver and they recorded a first cd in 2001 followed by a CD in 2003. As an extension of this trio, Lucas Niggli created «Big Zoom», a quintet with Claudio Puntin and Peter Herbert as guests, with two releases (Big Ball, Sweat). Since 2002 he plays regularly in the Piano Trio with Jacques Demierre and Barry Guy. Since 1994 Lucas Niggli has played in a variety of different bands with Pierre Favre as his partner. These are, amongst others, «Singing Drums», «European Chamber Ensemble», «The Drummers», as well as a duo.Since 2006 he is composing for and performing with the international Drum Quartet Beat Bag Bohemia (with Kesivan Naidoo (SA), RolandoLamussene (MZ), and Peter Conradin Zumthor (CH).
