Event Description : THEATRE “The Reason of Ahasuerus, Birth of The Cabbage, Thanathopia” Dramatised reading by Octave Foundation.
Tribute to Rubén Darío as part of 'Literature and Thinking' Series.
Synopsis: Three short stories by the Nicaraguan writer, Rubén Darío, who was the leader of
the modernismo movement in the literature in Spanish, which flourished at the end of the 19th century. A comedy (The birth of Cabbage), a thriller story (Thanathopia), and a ironical
metaphor of the different kinds of government incarnate in animals (The Reason of Ahasuerus), will be performed by Octave Foundation on the occasion of the 100 anniversary of the death of this major author of the literature. This selection of stories shows the evolution of the author's work, from his earliest stories, most related to his poetry and the characteristics of literary modernism (in which dazzle shining jewelry, princesses and palaces, and where poets were both the outsiders and the main characters) until the last much gloomier, and that link turn to the stream of fantastic (so fruitful current in Latin America throughout the twentieth century), and serve as a bridge between influences of Edgar Allan Poe and the French and English nineteenth stories, and later writers like Borges or Cortazar.
Presented by Octave Foundation
About the performers: Octave Foundation is an NGO that was established with the idea of
bridging the gaping divide between India’s North Eastern states and the rest of the country by bringing together folk tales, narratives, culture, habits, traditions, simplicities and complexities, words and songs. Growing up in a decade that has witnessed innumerable socio-political conflicts, the founders of the organization recognize that creative arts and performance arts transcend all boundaries by forming a language of their own. To bring people together, which is critical now than ever before, we have to delve deeper into our roots and give platforms of convergence to celebrate ethnic diversities. With this mission, Octave Foundation is attempting to weave the dying art of storytelling and the strong need of cultural convergence to a single platform called Wari. The word ‘Wari’ means ‘story’ in Manipuri language and since its inception in May 2016, nine stories spanning nine different regions have been performed. Wari is an effort to initiate conversations.
