Synopsis:
The narrative of the story revolves around the arrival of Panchlight (Petromax) in Mahto Toli (caste based group in village) of an undisclosed village in rural India. Panchlight is an advanced version of a kerosene lamp which is attached with paraffin and a hand pump. Symbolically, this lamp becomes the central character around which Renu weaves his narrative.
The hierarchical Panchayat of Mahto Toli decides to purchase a Panchlight from the fines collected over a period of several months. Panchlight has become some sort of prestige issue of possession for Mahto Toli, more, since it is already purchased by the rival Tolis. With his trademark ability of vivid description and vernacular idiom, Renu carries the readers from the fair to the village and finally establishes the climax where the villagers are in a catch-22 situation in front of their prize purchase (Panchlight), since no one knows how to light it in the Toli. Quite vividly, Renu depicts the anxiety and impending humiliation the Toli is bound to face if their Panchlight is lit by a member of rival Toli. In such a scenario, the Toli will lose all honour and will become a butt of laughter among the other Tolis of the village. However, in an anti-climax, a young man named Godhan, who faces social expulsion from the Panchayat, for an alleged eve-teasing and singing lewd cinema song towards his lady love Munari, restores the honour of the Toli by lighting the Panchlight. Panchlight depicts the moment of defeat and anguish followed by an unexpected rescue which comes through improvisation.
With its well-timed humour and idyllic innocence, the story also illustrates some important themes which are not only relevant to the location that it represents but on the contrary, has resonances with the entire rural Indian society. A society which is standing at the crossroads of tradition and modernity and the choice seems difficult. Renu, without being judgmental pens this anxious situation with his characteristic humour, wit and satire.

On 2nd April, 2015, team ParyaasKala Manch decided to start an awareness movement to “Stop Female Foeticide”.
According to 2011 censor report, there are only 918 girls over every 1000 boys and in the past 40 years there is a decline in sex ratios, which is really a matter of worry!!!!!
Why is this happening? Where are all the girls disappearing?
Most of the people think that boys can run the dynasty, they get dowry when they get married and they can help, support and take care of their parents in the future when they grow old. This is the reason; most of the people have a desire for a baby boy. On the other side, girls are not safe because of the increase in the crime against women. When a baby boy is born, people celebrate and throw parties; even Eunuch turn up and dance; in return they get money as Shagun. These are the reasons why most of the people have a desire for a baby boy.
Is there a baby boy or a girl in the womb of the lady? People misuse the benefits of the technology and can get the sex determination test done. However, it is illegal in India and also against the humanity.
Decline in the sex ratio has an adverse effect on the society. Due to this, trafficking, rape, kidnapping & forcible marriages are happening in the society. In the present scenario women feel insecure because of this.
Is it possible to change the mindset of the people for sex discrimination or sex determination? To bring the change in this kind of mindset STOP FEMALE FOETICIDE ”Beti Bachao-Beti Padao” social awareness movement is going on since 9th May, 2015 in Delhi & NCR by ParyaasKala Manch. Under this movement hindi open air theatrical production “GUDIA” is being organized at many public places, malls & markets, women organizations & educational institutions in Delhi/NCR. The team had performed total 67 shows till date and the shows are still going on. ParyaasKala Manch is planning to take the movement to the rural circuit at the earliest.
On 5th June, 2015 ParyaasKala Manch team organized street play on the subject of “Prevention of Air Pollution” on the World Environment Day at Dilli Haat, Janak Puri in association with Delhi Tourism Department.
ParyaasKala Manch had collaborated with Living the Drama, a United Kingdom based Non – Profit Organization to run the awareness movement in the United Kingdom for the Asian communities. Living the Drama is Paryaas`s International Movement Partner for this awareness movement.
India has the maximum percentage of the youth in the world & the youth can bring the change. Prayas has plan to take this awareness movement to educational institutions to target youth & started the same from Convent of Jesus & Mary College (JMC), South Campus, Delhi University from 23rd September, 2015 & planned to take it to all the colleges in the near future.
