Event Description :
DANCE 'Khol Do' & 'Hokkus Bokkus' Two Short Dance Performances based on Saadat Hasan Manto's story by the same name

About the performances :

Khol Do, one the most famous and controversial stories by Sadaat Hassan Manto is set in the backdrop of Partition (1947). Sirajuddin wakes up in a refugee camp among the screams and cries of men and women and as he gradually regains consciousness he realizes, that his daughter Sakina is missing. The rest of the story is about his search and relentless wait for Sakina. It is as much a story of Sakina’s search for her father, her experience of being uprooted, of crossing border, of confronting the horror and violence of Partition/Independence.

‘Hokkus Bokkus’, meaning ‘Who is he? Who am I’ is a Kashmiri lullaby. This piece is NOT about Kashmir since there is much more to Kashmir than pellets, guns, curfews and all that we are seeing/hearing now. And yet undeniably, this piece emerges from and because of the horror and pain, Kashmir has been going through. It is about the sobs, whispers, cries, wails, fights, and strengths that has become part of everyday in Kashmir. It is ‘performer's’ ode to Kashmir.

Duration: 15 minutes each

Language: Hindi, Kashmiri, English

Choreography and Performance : Shruti Ghosh
