BORN TO SING

BORN TO SING
presents MS Subbulakshmi's songs in many Indian languages, with a narrative in English to trace the influences which shaped her mind and her music ranging from the medieval bhakti tradition to the Indian freedom struggle

Like the scent of jasmine that she loved her voice continues to mesmerize listeners.
MS Subbulakshmi (1916-2004) was acclaimed as one of the greatest musicians of India, and awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour.
The shy girl from the temple town of Madurai, groomed by her old world musician mother Shanmukhavadivu, and fine-tuned by doyen Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, excelled in the highest traditions of classical Carnatic music. No one was prouder than her guru when she became the first woman to be awarded the Madras Music Academy's Sangita Kalanidhi.
Playing the lead role in the film Mira (1947), she became a national icon.
She emphasized national unity by singing the verses of saint poets from across India, in 13 languages. She lived a Spartan life and donated most of her earnings to charitable institutions promoting education, research, healthcare, social and spiritual welfare.
