On September 8th, Spain commemorates its national “Day of the Aid Worker”. According to figures released by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), 2,788 humanitarian workers from the Iberian country are currently deployed worldwide on different assignments.
The Embassy of Spain in India and Instituto Cervantes wishes to contribute to this important occasion by organizing an event that aims at showcasing the commitment of numerous Spanish aid workers and their many success stories. Diplomatic representatives of Spain will be directing the event that will open with presentations made by leading Spanish NGOs. These will be followed by the screening of the acclaimed 2013 film "Vicente Ferrer" (Image). This event aims at inspiring the citizens of India, specially its youth, in order to join the efforts of Spanish NGOs. Many Indian citizens already collaborate with 56 Spanish ONGs to
make a better, safer and more sustainable India. The “Day of the Aid Worker”, celebrated annually in Spain since 2006, is a public recognition of their humanitarian commitment. They are professionals who work in sectors of cooperation ranging from economic development and democratic governance, to humanitarian action, health, education, food security, water and sanitation, environment or culture, among others.
According to AECID´s data, 51% of them are women, and 72% are professionals over 35 years old. By Spanish regions and communities, the largest group comes from the Community of Madrid (24%), Catalonia ranks second, with 14%, followed by Castilla y León (13%) and Andalusia (10%).
