Synopsis: The Wadali Brothers – Puran Chand Wadali and Pyare Lal Wadali – are Sufi singers and musicians from Guru Ki Wadali in the Amritsar District of Punjab, India.
Born into the fifth generation of musicians given to singing the message of Sufi saints, Puran Chand
learnt music from his father Thakur Das and then from celebrated masters like Durga Das, Ashiq Ali Khan, Machchan Khan, and Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. Pyare Lal was trained by his elder brother, whom he considers his mentor and guru even today.
Their first musical performance outside their village was at the Harballabh temple in Jalandhar. In 1975, the duo went to Jalandhar to perform at the Harballabh Sangeet Sammelan but was not allowed to sing because their appearance did not pass muster. Disappointed, they decided to make a musical offering at the Harballabh temple, where an executive of All India Radio, Jalandhar, spotted them and recorded their first song.
The Wadali Brothers sing in the gurbani, kafi, ghazal and bhajan genres of music. They excel in rendering with feeling the lyrics of Sufi poets like Shah Hussain, Baba Farid and Bulle Shah in the traditional style of the region. Their performances are marked by lively and imaginative improvisation.
They have also sung in Gulzar's film Pinjar, and one song in the film Dhoop.
They have been honoured with many awards which include the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, and the Punjab Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. Shri Puran Chand Wadali was honoured with the
Padma Shri award by the Government of India in 2005.
