Event description : Darwesh presents 'The Story of Roshanara Begum' a theatre walk
Embark on rich and theatrical journey into Delhi’s past with Darwesh. This time we take you to the court of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and bring to you the political intrigues that plagued his court. The story centres on the character of Roshanara Begum the daughter of Shah Jahan and one of the most powerful women during 17th century Delli.

This event is an ode to women in Delhi and exploration of Delhi’s herstories. This theatre walk is set in 17th century when the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan is no more fit to rule his empire in Shahjahanabad (now Old Delhi) and this leads to a constant battle of power and principles between his sons and daughters. The story of this troubled time is represented through the perspective of Shah Jahan’s most powerful second daughter Roshanara Begum who even though lived an active courtly life died a sad and lonely death. It follows her personal journey through her rise into power with the support of her brother Aurangzeb, her hatred towards her elder brother Dara Shikoh and her elder sister Jahanara Begum and eventually to her downfall. The entire play unfolds through dialogues between Shah Jahan’s daughters Jahanara and Roshanara. What makes this performance special is that it is set inside the tomb of Roshanara Begum also known as “Baradari” where Roshanara lay buried.
