Event Description : “Castaways” a play by Itziar Pascual.

About the play: Itziar Pascual dedicates her play Castaways to “all those women in the twentieth century who sailed on the ships of the forgotten”. Through a series of ten short scenes between pairs of women of contrasting age and class, Pascual explores the theme of political exile and the struggle of living as social and cultural outcasts. Serious, engaging and provocative, Castaways attempts to give voice to the historically silenced.

About the playwright: Among the generation of Spanish playwrights collectively known as the “Marques de Bradomin” group, Itziar Pascual stands out for her eclectic postmodern theatre. Her plays are characterised by their highly fragmented nature and minimalist style. Poetic, and at times disturbing, her dialogues echo the vibrant language of today’s generation; a recurring theme through her plays is memory. Music adds to the lyrical character of her works. Pascual’s work demonstrates a profound commitment to giving voice to the silenced, exploring experiences of solitude and misunderstanding, and examining the operations of power and privilege.

About the director: Juhi Jha is involved with education and critical through an initiative called Project Motley, which she founded two years ago. As a part of this project, besides researching, creating visual content and creating interactive performances, she also conducts interdisciplinary creativity workshops (e.g.: metaphor, music improvisation etc). She has written two performances- "Rosa goes to London", which is on alternative learning styles and "Identity and Belonging"- a short solo piece which she performed at The Attic in 2013. Her subject of Undergraduate studies was Psychology- and this forms the primary lens for most of her endeavours. She is interested in performance as a medium for communicating complex ideas about society, and as a tool for getting discussion and introspection going among audiences, young and old. She is particularly interested in exploring the subjects of Privilege, Love, Cultural Imperialism and Work through performance.
