Event Description : The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library cordially invites you to a Seminar on ‘Partition’s two Faces: Instant and long term’ by Prof.Partha S. Ghosh, NMML.

Abstract : The Partition of India took place in 1947 (67 years ago).  It continues to evoke scholarly attention to this day.  Ever since research has gathered pace oral history projects have contributed further to the discourse.  There are fresh works not only in English but languages like Bengali. The speaker will try to enrich and discuss two dimensions of the story with fresh insight.  One relates to the task of rehabilitation, both in India and Pakistan, and the other to the cultural ramifications of Partition.  While the first was direct, urgent and quantifiable the second was indirect, long-term and subjective.  While the first mainly pertainedto the memories of the displaced the second has to do with memories of not only the displaced but also of a lot of their descendants. It also concerned those indirectly involved with the process.  The talk is part of the speaker’son-going project at NMML on “Making Sense of the Cross-Border Migrations in South Asia”.

Speaker : Prof.Partha Ghosh is a Senior Fellow at the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library.  Earlier, he was Professor of South Asian Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, Research Director at the Indian Council of Social Science Research, Visiting Professor at the OKD Institute of Social Change and Development in Guwahati, Humboldt Fellow at the Heidelberg University in Germany, and Ford Scholar at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in America.  He has published several books and many research articles in professional journals.  His academic interests include South Asian politics, ethnicity, majority-minority relations, inter-state migrations, and domestic politics-foreign policy interface.  His latest book is: The Politics of Personal Law in South Asia: Identity, Nationalism and the Uniform Civil Code, 2007.
