Event Description : The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library cordially invites you to a Seminar on ‘Repainting the Political Landscape: Nehru's approach to ideological hegemony--techniques, tropes and tricks (1947-1952)’ by Dr. Harish Khare, Jawaharlal Nehru Fellow, New Delhi
Abstract : When Jawaharlal Nehru became Prime Minister on 15 August 1947, he had the making of a very weak prime minister. Almost all the institutional equations were loaded against him; all he had in his favour was Gandhi’s patronage, his pedigree and his popularity. Between independence and the first general elections, Nehru broke out of this institutionally circumscribed space by pursuing ideological hegemony in his favour. In this pursuit, he displayed innovation and imagination; his success in this sophisticated game enabled Nehru to remain Prime Minister for next twelve years.
Speaker : Dr. Harish Khare is currently a Jawaharlal Nehru Fellow, with the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund, and is researching a project, ‘Governing India in 21st Century: Reinventing Nehruvian Executive Leadership Model’.Harish Khare is a leading public intellectual and has for over two decades commented on India’s constitutional institutions, democracy, party system, pluralism and secularism. Harish Khare has worked for The Hindu, The Times of India and The Hindustan Times, and has written for many publications, including The New York Times and The New Statesman. Harish Khare also worked as Media Adviser to the Prime Minister of India, from June 2009 to January 2012. Dr. Khare is a Ph.D. from Yale University and has remained engaged with the academic world even during his days as professional journalist.
