Event Description : The Portret Project presents ‘Out Of/ In Countenance(s)’ a group art show.
The Portret Project, a niche gallery concept focusing on portraiture as an art form and its transformation through the ages, is having their inaugural exhibition to showcase a variety of artists from all genres under one roof.
The first show: Out Of/ In Countenance(s) has to do with appearances, especially the expression of the face and also the metaphysical essence of a person. This has long been a crucial – if not the vital – element in portraiture. It is the aim of this show to engage with ‘the countenance’ in portraiture and not only to show works which are significant in formal terms, but to include a conceptual basis, thereby engaging in a dialogue which is contemporary yet not abstruse and may be created using the traditional techniques and conventions of portraiture as well as new media. The aim is to present to the audience well-crafted, conceptually sound, resonant images which are expansive in their scope and ambition.
There is a great deal of flexibility in the manner in which portraits and ‘countenances’ can be experienced. This show also seeks to look at portraiture anew to consider the relationship between the artist, sitter and the viewer. It proposes to facilitate a new look at portraiture, to re-evaluate and reclaim it as a practice central to artistic discourse. The aim of this show is to nurture the form, reconsider its role within the context of contemporary art, re-present it and support its practitioners.
The artists showcasing at the first show are Anupam Sud, Sagar Bhowmick, Hugo Bonamin, Susmit Biswas, Rhys Hymsworth, Avijit Mukherjee, Pulkit Prajapati & Alpesh Dave.
Speaking on the occasion Sakhshi Mahajan said, “In our inaugural exhibition, we are trying to explore a unique relationship between the portrait sitter, the artist and the viewers by capturing countenances in a variety of spacial temporal ways.”
About The Portret Project : The Portret Project was founded in 2013 in New Delhi and focuses on portraiture as a form of art and an emphasis on its radical role in the history of art.
Portraiture is a highly revealing exercise. The aim of this project is to explore important questions of how the self is represented and defined as well as the means through which this commemoration takes place.
The genre has widened its parameters to include diverse media and considers a wide variety of individuals through its ennobling effects. (The 21st century has opened an array of new possibilities and dimensions for facial representation).
What is it, therefore, that is desired of a contemporary portrait? A mere likeness is not enough; there must be an element of surprise, which makes use of the tool of the artist’s imagination to see past the subject’s discernable appearance towards a larger reality. Whether representing the face of the artist or another, the fundamental idea of a good portrait is to draw in the viewer and inform him or her of the subject’s essence, identity and existence.
While each show will be a unique illustration and attempt to interpret portraiture it will also reiterate the amorphous state of art today. Artists – both traditional and conceptual – continue to plumb the infinite richness and variety of the genre for new means of expression and have been rewarded with a renewal of critical, curatorial and commercial interest.
TPP will also be offering portrait-commissioning services.
COMMISION A PORTRAIT: The portrait of a loved or admired person is a memorable, satisfactory and enjoyable image but can also be a unique and personalized vehicle of investment. The choice of artist for a commission is, of course, paramount. Our strategy is bold in the sense of encouraging young artists working in a variety of media to embrace portraiture and, in doing so, keeping the tradition of figuration and representation alive. We see ourselves as the bridge between the artist and the sitter, helping to formulate the nature, medium, size and scale of the commission and then stepping in to the role of observer, encouraging and stimulating the artist but not influencing them.
