To celebrate this UK-India partnership, and as part of Re-Imagine Arts, there will be a screening of two films by the acclaimed UK artist John Akomfrah at the British Council during the weekend of 1 and 2 February. A founding member of the Black Audio Visual Film Collective and Smoking Dogs Films, the work made by John and his collaborators over the past 30 years is now part of the UK’s prestigious national art collections and can be seen at the Tate and elsewhere.
Word.Sound.Power features Handsworth Songs directed by John Akomfrah a documentary that won the coveted Grierson Award in 1987. The Wonderful World of Louis Armstrong, 1999
Louis Armstrong created much of what we understand to be Jazz. Armstrong was an innovator – the first great Jazz soloist, a band leader, pop star, actor and cultural ambassador. His story is the consummate tale of a rise from rags to riches success. The Wonderful World of Louis Armstrong is a documentary portrait of Armstrong’s fantastic life.
Stan Tracey : The Godfather of British Jazz, 2003
With its rich sound design and sumptuous digital cinematography, Stan Tracey : The Godfather of British Jazz is a deeply moving portrait of composer Stan Tracey who recalls his life with unprecedented honesty. The story unfolds through a mix of archive and interviews with musical giants such as saxophonist Courtney Pine and Cleo Laine, the doyenne of British jazz. The film was nominated in 2003 for a Grierson Award in the category Best Arts Documentary.
