Event Description : BUTOH - Photography Exhibition by Sankai Juku.
Butoh is a dance form that emerged in Japan in the aftermath of World War II, inspired by the Ankoku-Butoh movement. It typically involves playful and grotesque imagery, taboo topics, extreme or absurd environments, and is traditionally performed in white body makeup with slow hyper-controlled motion, with or without an audience. There is no set style, and it may be purely conceptual with no movement at all.
The Japan Foundation proudly presents the Butoh – Photography Exhibition by Sankai Juku Company. This company will also participate in Bharat Rang Mahotsava 2014.
Sankai Juku was founded in 1975 by Director, choreographer, designer Ushio Amagtsu. It is an all-male company that has more than 40 years of history as an avante-grade form of dance theatre. The exhibition of Butoh will be presented as framed photographs exploring the activities, techniques, performance, movement and expressions involved in Butoh. In conjunction to exhibition, DVD screening will help to explore more about this dance form.
