A complex blend of historical traditions has imparted to Indian culture a deep seated heterogeneity, which is at once unique and universal. In this process, ancient Indian philosophy and literature, interaction with lands abroad, invasions and colonization created several forces and torques, internal and external, which had profound effect on the development of a way of life that had its echoes throughout the sub-continent. The discussion would examine these influences on the evolution of the classical performing art tradition including myths and perceptions that have coloured the past and the present besides impacting future developments.
