Event Description : The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library cordially invites you to a Public Lecture (in the ‘India in Transition’ series) on ‘From Literacy to Education: How can we make the transition?’ by Dr. Rukmini Banerji, Pratham, New Delhi.


Abstract : What does the transition from literacy to education mean for an individual in India today? What does such a transition imply for a society? What are definitions of literacy and of education? How is literacy and education used in daily life?  How are perceptions and practice of both influenced by these definitions? Drawing on experiences from twenty years of working with children and families, schools and communities, the speaker will pose questions and challenges that merit serious discussion as we think of how to prepare children and youth for a changing India. 

Speaker : Dr. Rukmini Banerji has a Ph.d in Education from the University of Chicago, USA. For the past twenty years, she has worked with Pratham, a non-government organization whose mission is every child in school and learning well. From 2005, she has also headed the ASER effort (Annual Status of Education Report).
