Event Description : 'The Imaginary Life Of Dogs' a play.
A soldier emerges from hospital.
On the street he meets an old friend.
They sit down and the soldier begins to talk.
The friend listens.
And so a tale is born...
The story of oneself is ultimately the only story we ever tell. This story is impossible to tell because it has no beginning that we can reach back to nor an end that we can foresee. In the stories we tell about ourselves, we can never reach back beyond the fantasy that generates them. The desire to get at the origin of the story blinds us to the origin of desire itself, and the told is shadowed by the un-told.
Taking as its starting point the pair of stories known as The Deceitful Marriage and The Dialogue of the Dogs from the Exemplary Novels of Miguel Cervantes, The Imaginary Life of Dogs is a story about telling stories structured around three monologues, each one arising out of the other. A soldier overhears two dogs talking, one of the two dogs describes the funeral of a shepherd, and a shepherdess arrives at the funeral unannounced to defend herself. Each of the narratives reveals - and hides - a web of desire, desire which appears sometimes as love, sometimes as fantasy.
The performance itself is located within the exhibition of portraits of anonymous people created from paper and charcoal by the artist Omar Arraez, a deliberate juxtaposition which positions the performance within the larger human mindscape. The use of paper, light, bodies and the spoken word serves to highlight the ephemeral nature of performance, whose very fragility becomes the source of its own form.
