Event Description : FD Zone presents Screening of two films presenting contrasting perspectives reflecting on unfulfilled promises of the Indian State. The first film, Freedom Marches On produced in 1949, is obvious in its 'propagandist' agenda. One can see the excitement of a new nation being born - its ideals, goals, plans seem almost achievable. From this we move to India 67, made twenty years after Independence.
This film could be read as an interrogation of the fundamental principles of rights, equality and justice embedded in the Constitution, and a creeping disillusionment that has set in because of the failures of the Indian State.
Freedom Marches On
(English/1949/11mins)
This is a review of the various events that took place in India during the two eventful years following Independence.
India 67
Dir.S. Sukhdev
(1968/57mins)
The film was commissioned to celebrate 20 years of Indian Independence. Filmmaker Sukhdev travels the length and breadth of the country making images that are at once celebratory, homorous, ironic and sarcastic. Screenings followed by interaction with filmmaker and cinematographer, Avijit Mukul Kishore.
