Ananda Devi In conversation with Vijaya Rao

Biography - Ananda Devi
Born in Mauritius, Ananda Devi began to make her mark in Mauritian literature when she won, aged 15, a prize at a short-story competition open to all Francophone countries. This marked the beginning of a long literary career that now spans forty years and fifteen books including novels, short-stories and poetry, and that has seen her become one of the major French language writers from the Indian Ocean.
Her works have been published by the prestigious French publisher Gallimard and have been translated into several languages. She has won many prizes and awards, notably for her novels Eve de ses décombres and Le sari vert (“The Green Sari”). She was made “Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres” by the French Government in 2010 and also received the second highest decoration of Mauritius. Her work is studied in universities across the world.
Her novel entitled Indian Tango has been published, in English translation, by Random House India in December 2013.

Biography - Vijaya Rao

She teaches and researches on the representation of India in French and Francophone literature, and literature of Quebec and the Indian Ocean. She has edited Reaching the Great Moghul: francophone travel writing on India of the 17th and 18th centuries (Yoda Press, 2012), Langue étrangère et autres poèmes by Ranajit Sarkar (Daastaan, 2012), published an anthology on Indian Writing in French (Ecriture indienne d’expression française) and has co-edited a special issue for the journal Synergies-Inde on cross-readings and francophone encounters between Quebec and India.

Background : Writers, Etc is our literary platform: a space where the written word gets primacy, where written ideas and their practitioners can interact with each other and the general public, coming together to ask pertinent questions and seek their answers: what role does literature play in contemporary societies? How do writers see their responsibilities vis-à-vis the public and, turning that over, how do we see writers? How has the written word adapted to its place among the growing pantheon of varied and addictive forms of cultural transmission? The aim is to encourage a discovery, unencumbered by genre, of all the written oeuvres, ranging from living legends to new and emerging talent.
