Indian and Egyptian artisans join hands at Dilli Haat for Crafts & Skill Development Workshop in collaboration with Dastkari Haat Samiti, and Egyptian Network for Integrated Development.
The Dastkari Haat Samiti’s annual crafts bazaar at Dilli Haat, INA, conceived by its President and craft expert Jaya Jaitly, will create a vibrant and colourful atmosphere as it celebrates its 28th Anniversary.
ENID and Dastkari Haat Samiti are collaborating in the training of 10 Egyptian crafts persons by 10 Indian Crafts persons at Dilli Haat from 2-15th January ’14 during the 28th annual crafts bazaar of the Dastkari Haat Samiti.
Dr. Heba Handoussa founded the Egypt Network for Integrated Development “ENID” which aims to create a viable process for the identification of problem areas and for the dissemination of solutions to selected national problems in an integrated process.
Dr. Handoussa was managing director of the Economic Research Forum for the Arab Countries, Iran and Turkey (ERF), a non-government, non-profit institution established in 1993 to promote policy-relevant research on the MENA region. She served as advisor to the Egyptian government and as consultant to the World Bank. She was a member of the Shura Council, Egypt's Upper House of Parliament. She is also a member of Egypt's National Specialized Councils that report directly to the President. She is also a member on the Board of the Central Bank of Egypt. She also serves on the Board of international and regional research related institutions including CEDEJ, IFPRI, UNRISD, and sits on the WBI External Advisory Board of the World Bank. She is also a commissioner of the “World Commission on the Social Dimension of Globalization” of the ILO. Dr. Handoussa is also the coordinator of the Femise network. Her numerous publications cover the areas of structural adjustment, industrial policy, productively growth, foreign aid, institutional reform and comparative development models.

This programme comes as a result of the Akshara Crafting Indian Scripts Exhibition going to cairo in April 2013. It is a follow up of the collaboration between India and Egypt towards capacity building in rural areas. The skills selected for training have been selected by the Egyptian counterparts.
More than 160 craftspeople from the villages, towns and cities of various parts of India will bring exciting craft talent and traditions in never-seen-before avatars along with wonderful craft skills from Egypt’s great and artistic civilization. Visitors will be able to interact, learn, appreciate and explore Indian and Egyptian handicrafts and textiles.
Craftsmen from Egypt have been invited to collaborate with Dastkari Haat Samiti which will conduct a skill training and exchange workshop of the same genre. The entire fortnight’s collaboration will result in long term friendships and provide unique inputs to the crafts sector while enhancing economic well being and diplomatic ties at the ground level.
Egyptian’s embroidery tradition has evolved, like India’s over 5000 years. Motifs are specialized according to regions. Each can be adapted according to any new design prototypes provided by good designers.
Hand-woven cloths in cotton are preferred for executing embroidery. East Asian links and Moghul influences have been imbibed in both India and Egypt

Highlights of this year’s Dastkari Haat craft Bazaar 2014
Sadhna group from Rajasthan, Saasha group of Kantha from West Bengal, Sabala group from Karnataka, Embroidery of Punjab by Nabha Foundation and Embroidery from Artesania from Gujarat
Live demonstration of the looms: more than 12 states will represent their weaving looms at Dilli Haat.
National and state-awardees from Bihar, Gujrat, Jammu Kashmir, Jharkhand, Chattisgarh, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and others will demonstrate their skills.
Workshops: wire toys, Madhubani paintings, Gond paintings, paper mache, thread jewelery making, puppet making, and pottery and bamboo items.
Folk and cultural performance: All days from 11am – 8.00pm
Folk music from Rajasthan, folk dance such as Kalbelia, Langa, Bhavai will be the main attraction.
With an eclectic mix of national-awardees and artisans-in-training, the Samiti’s artisan-members are stars in their own right. The opportunity provided by the Samiti has enabled many members to travel across the globe and collaborate with artisans in other developing nations, creating products that are utility-based and market-friendly.
Dastkar, a national NGO : working with crafts and craftspeople for over three decades, strongly believes in crafts as catalytic tool for social and economic empowerment and earning. Partnering with Delhi Tourism, it is developing the NATURE BAZAAR venue in Andheria Modh as a craft and cultural hub, linking South Delhi and Gurgaon.
