About Dr. R. Nagaswamy : Dr. R. Nagaswamy, (1930) the first Director of Archaeology, (rtd.) and the first Vice Chancellor of the Kanchipuram University, has his post graduate degree in Sanskrit and Literature from Madras University, and Doctor’s degree in Art History from the Poona University and training in Archaeology and conservation from ASI. He joined Government service as Curator for Art and Archaeology in the Government Museum Madras, and after serving for three years as Assistant Special
Officer for Archaeology became the first Director of Archaeology, in which capacity he served with distinction for 22 years till his retirement in 1988.
He developed the State Department in all fields like Excavation, Conservation, Publication, 12 Regional museums, including one Pre-historic museum, one tribal museum, and an Islamic museum etc. He established an Institute of Epigraphy, and brought out publications and popular guides to monuments. He has authored over forty books on History, Epigraphy, Archaeology, Numismatics, Temple Culture, Dance, Music,
Ancient law and Society, and others and his articles have been published in 23 languages of the world by the UNESCO. He is held as the World authority on Chola bronzes and an acknowledged expert in Indian art and archaeology. Endowed with several national & international awards, Dr. Nagaswamy is also Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society. He has toured across the world and lectured in all the leading Universities of the world.
