Creation and Performance: John Britton (DUENDE)
I was a soldier but I never wanted war. So when one happened, I ran away. Simple.
I’m hiding.
Hiding from my own side.
Hiding from the other side.
(Or sides).
(I forget).
I’ve done terrible things and terrible things have been done to me.
I keep wanting to laugh.
I’m laughing.
It all seems terribly funny.
Intimate and confessional. Brazen and blustering. Funny, bewildered, frightened, and curiously full of hope, Echo Chamber brings us a human at the outer edge of his humanity.
John Britton has been performing, directing and teaching for over 25 years. He shares his approach to training physical performers through an extensive programme of international workshops and residencies. He is a researcher at the University of Huddersfield (UK) and teachers regularly at Balletakademien, Stockholm. He also teaches regularly in Greece, Germany, France and Australia. He is Artistic Director of DUENDE, an international collaboration of artists committed to ensemble performance.
LENZ-LENS: A PERFORMANCE ESSAY
Text: Georg Buchner
Direction: Parnab Mukherjee
Performance: Greeny Francis
A Best of Kolkata Campus/The Arshinagar Project collaboration.
What is memory? Isn’t it a collection of unrelenting images playing out through a never ending slide show- getting back at us- with new press button keys- lapse, relapse, locate, relocate, structure, de-structure, condition, de-condition, belong, unbelong, dead- alive, alive-dead, unfettered, uncluttered, unhinged- almost a new genre of music- the refugee blues
Don’t allow your nostalgia to become violent. Nostalgia also kills. Because all the neutral memories are dangerously vagrant. They waft, bite and chew. From the mirrorpolis to forestpolis to cactuspolis- it was one helluva journey. That journey is the performance.
An independent media analyst and a performance consultant by profession, Parnab Mukherjee is one of the leading alternative theatre directors of the country. Currently, a roving editor with two publication initiatives, he has earlier worked for a sports fortnightly an English daily and a Bengali daily. He has created a personal idiom of using spaces for theatre exploration and has worked extensively on a range of human rights issues.
