Event Description : Utsav-Ranjana’s Academy of Dance has in its 25 years of existence through meaningful activities contributed to the cultural receptacle of the country. National stature festivals of Indian classical dances, seminars to propagate and promote allied Odissi art forms, choreographies, lec-dems and participation in major events of the country have constantly been the endeavour of Utsav.
In the year 2013, another chapter is being added to our activities titled ‘Kalingutsav’, which would be a platform to showcase the ethnic art forms of Odisha in dance and music streams, which have in some way or the other contributed in enriching Odissi dance. The theme this year is the traditional art of ‘Gotipua dance’.
This year the focus would be on Gotipua dance, which is unique for its combination of song and dance by the young male dancers between the age of 5-15 years. They perform to scintillating lyrics of the renowned poets of Odisha for the last several centuries. The formations of the acrobatic dance performance is another stunning and awesome feature of this art.
Gotipua dance tradition forms the root and foundation of the present–day Odissi dance. The early Gurus such as Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, Guru Mayadhar Raut and others were all Gotipua performers in their young age. It is their training in Gotipua that became the fundamental source which enriched their knowledge and basic understanding of the techniques which they beautifully blended in Odissi dance.
Kalingutsav will be held on the 16th February, 2013 in collaboration with India International Centre, New Delhi beginning 5:30 p.m. with an introduction of Gotipua art form by Chittaranjan Malliya, an expert of Gotipua dance and Secretary, Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi alongwith two gurus of this tradition. This would be followed by group performances showcasing the different and various aspects of the traditional Gotipua style. Ranjana Gauhar’s profile and introduction of Utsav is attached for easy reference.
We would deeply appreciate if your esteemed magazine/publication/web-portal will as always support our endeavours by giving wide publicity through the daily/weekly/fortnightly events dairy, interviews and coverage of the festival.
