The lecture will look at the process of decoding/decipherment. The speaker will define clearly the steps she took to come to the conclusion that this first writing system of India (one of the earliest of the world along with the Egyptian and Mesopotamian) was logographic. That is, the signs bore and ‘showed’ their meaning in their ‘shapes’, in other words they were meaning-oriented. The present concept of the sound-orientation of writing was not yet conceptualized. But despite this the inscriptions clearly convey their meaning, contents and purpose, which was to keep accounts. This is the ultimate conclusion, and the study reconstructs the economic practices of the Indus civilization for the first time.
Chair : Prof S.C. Malik, interdisciplinary anthropologist and archaeologist
