In this exhibition we are highlighting the rich variety of the Indian landscape, from the stark expanse of the mountains of Ladakh, to the placid flow of the Ganga immersed in rituals at Banaras that give it its aura of timelessness and the shadows lurking in the depth of a Santiniketan lotus pond where the daily baths of the village folk overturn the teeming expanse of flowers and leaves for a moment before it covers the depths again with its surface tension that he captures so well in the glow of oil and textured brushwork.
The choice of venues is not accidental. It is a blend of three major spiritual trends that span this country. If Banaras is the centre of an ancient cult of nature and sun-worship blending the complementary roles of fire and water to put people to rest, the search of the Buddha for liberation from the constraints of life is an early example of man seeking self expression as a source of freedom, while Tagore’s espousal of secular enlightenment as a means of intellectual and political freedom from colonial oppression is the modern expression of a quest the artist brings together in the context of the ongoing life of our people.
