  • Time : 6:30 pm
  • Event Details : Delhi Chamber Choir performs themed concert entitled “My soul yearns for God”: Spiritual Choral Works of Many Traditions, Nations and Eras. Admission to the concert is free on a first come, first served basis.
  • The programme of works by composers such as J.S Bach, Mozart, William Byrd and Gabriel Fauré is designed to show how great artists have responded to the spiritual impulse within them. The choir’s director, Gabriella Boda-Rechner, explains, “Music is ideally suited to expressing different aspects of our response to the divine: adoration, praise, thanksgiving, mystery. We have chosen contrasting works from different religious traditions, countries and times, so that the audience can hear a great variety of sacred music, and we hope there will be something that speaks to everyone. Whether or not you are religious, above all it is beautiful music.”
  • The music to be performed sets texts from a variety of sacred scriptures and includes resonant, mystical works from the Russian Orthodox tradition; Renaissance polyphony from Europe; and expressive modernism from the USA. The concert climaxes with a chorus of thanksgiving from a cantata by J.S. Bach. “Many people feel that the musical mastery and spiritual expression of Bach’s works have not been surpassed in the West in the 250 years since he died,” comments Boda-Rechner. While most of the works are to be performed by the choir alone, some will be accompanied by piano and violin.
  • About Delhi Chamber Choir : Now in its second year, the Delhi Chamber Choir has rapidly established itself as the city’s premier vocal ensemble and raised the bar for choral singing in the capital. Under the direction of Gabriella-Boda Rechner, the choir most recently had a packed audience cheering at the Indian International Centre last December following a performance of works by Zoltan Kodály and Claude Debussy. The choir prides itself on presenting outstanding performances of western choral works that are rarely if ever heard in India.
  • The choir’s 23 members are selected by audition. More than a third of them represent some of the cream of Delhi’s home-grown singers; the others hail from France, Germany, Italy, the UK and the USA. Gabriella Boda-Rechner is herself a Hungarian who lived in France for many years and has been a Delhi resident since 2006. She is a specialist in the Hungarian Kodaly method of teaching music, and has directed choral groups in Europe, Morocco, China and India. In Delhi she is also known as the director of the Capital City Minstrels and works with numerous other groups, including the Neemrana Music Foundation chorus and the Delhi Opera Ensemble.
