Event Description : The Alkazi Foundation for the Arts presents "Inner and Outer Lives: The Many Worlds of Homai Vyarawalla" an exhibition of Photographs.

Homai Vyarawalla (1913-2012) is known as India’s first woman press photographer. A return to her recently digitized archive reveals how the task of representing important public events and figures may have taken her attention away from a world that she had pursued quite passionately; the intimate details of everyday life and in particular, the social milieu of women. Varied works from the late 1930s to the early 1960s focus on women’s education and professional skills, war propaganda, newly emerging technologies and vignettes of the urban everyday in Bombay. Together, they draw our attention to the many and multifaceted worlds that Homai Vyarawalla inhabited.

Curator : Sabeena Gadihoke is an Associate Professor of Video and Television Production at the AJK Mass Communication Research Centre at Jamia Milia Islamia University, New Delhi and knew Homai Vyarawalla intimately for 15 years. She made a documentary on Vyarawalla and two other photographers titled Three Women and a Camera in 1998 and her biography of Homai Vyarawalla, Camera Chronicles of Homai Vyarawalla (Mapin/Parzor) was published in 2006.
