Event Description : "Spirit of the Horse" an exhibition of artworks by Sujata Dere
Artist: Sujata Dere graduated from the Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai in 1979. Dere originally trained in ceramics and held several exhibitions in New Delhi, India, in the early 1980s and received an enthusiastic response. She has displayed her work around the world and after almost half a decade she will be showcasing her work – “Spirit of the Horse” in Alliance Francaise. Her artwork is in prestigious private collections, including several Royal Families in India, and her works have won both critical and popular acclaim.
Dere has used abstraction and ‘gestalt’ to create an equine figure that moves with gestural energy on the painted surface and the work in mixed media, using layers of dry & wet materials.
The Theme: “Spirit of Horses”
Sujata Dere’s preoccupation with horses began in the early nineties when she moved to Wellington in the Nilgiri Hills. The Ooty Downs beckoned with an appeal impossible to resist. Swept by an overpowering urge to feel the unsurpassed exhilaration experienced by riders as they galloped across the downs bracing against the wind, she learned to ride and thus began her intense involvement with horses.
