EXHIBITION ( Sculpture ) : Solo Show by Rajendar Tiku at Gallery Espace, New Friends Colony - 11th November to 6th December 08
- Time : 11:00 am - 7:00 pm ( Sundays Closed )
- Event Details : Exhibition of sculptures by Rajendar Tiku.
- Rajendar Tiku is a recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Grant (2005); recognized with the National Award for Sculpture and conferred with the distinction of Eminent Artist by the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi (1999). This extensive show will articulate the sculptor's engagement with his chosen form of artistic expression through 25 sculptures in a range of mediums such as gold-gilded wood, bronze, stone and marble accompanied by works on paper and papyrus.
- Apparent through the titles of his works, by transforming abstract objects into artworks Tiku transforms tragedy into resilience and beauty. "Sprout" being a recurrent theme, a haiku by the Kashmiri poet, Shama Kaul forms the title of a gold-gilded wood sculpture: "Humne boyi hai apni asthiyon ki paniri – hum ugenge" (We have sown the seedlings of our remains – we shall sprout again). With works titled Hearth Back Home, My House in the Snow, or Snow Drops, Tiku evokes nostalgia. However, what strongly underscore his work are optimism, renewal and forgiveness with suggestions of survival under the most trying circumstances; an undying spirit that is waiting to germinate and take root. In order to read his work, we require compassion, an awareness of his artistic and personal journey, and an intuitive understanding of how trauma configures the artwork.
